Case Study
Noida Golf Course
a Members' Mobile App
Version 2 When pandemic hit, the courses were meant to be operated on govt. SOPs only, which meant controlling the flow, organising and streamlining everything end to end. Having records of player-caddy groups, and limiting the visitors to exact numbers were major features we pivoted against.
The Challenge
Design Goals
- To create a product that helps the user take an informed decision for his/her golfing plans.
- To design a model that gives leads and control to the management, to be prepared before hand for the upcoming trafic and have full authority over the movement inside the course.
Design Process
| Students between 10 to 14 years of age | 3.5% |
| Youngsters between 15 to 25 years of age | 5.6% |
| Adults between 26 to 45 years of age | 17.9% |
| Adults between 45 to 65 years of age | 44.3% |
| Seniors 65+ years of age | 28.7% |
Qualitative research in order to collect data relating to motivations, opinions, and beliefs :
- In-depth qualitative interviews based on assumptions.
- Competitive analysis to gather secondary research.
- Literature review to gather secondary research.
- Evaluative Usability testing to evaluate the low-fidelity prototype.
The one-on-one qualitative interviews with 10 participants, from senior target audience, uncovered some insights. Some of the questions were as follows :
Q. Which type of phone do you use ?
A. 90% has some kind of smartphone, and 10% used older keypad type phones.
Q. What apps do you use the most ?
A. 100% went with WhatsApp, 60% also used Youtube and 40% also used Facebook.
Q. How would you go about performing a tee-off booking?
A. Call the starter and book a slot.
Q. If explained/guided, will you be comfortable in using a new app ?
A. 70% agreed, 30% were not keen in developing a new practise.
Q. They were asked to share a trending video from youtube to a contact in their whatsapp, to measure response times.
A. 50% took 25-30s, 20% took 40-60s, and rest above 60s.
Although there were some solutions online for prebooking tee-off slots, they only had either option to engage members or get a paid booking from visitors. None compared to the model we served.
From this data I concluded that there should be multiple ways to book a tee-off slot for everyone, which not only exist in-app but also provided an in-person experience. The app should be as straight forward and easy to use as possible and the entire demograph should be divided in people below & aboce 45 years of age, having different response times, they should be allowed bookings in their own category.
Anirban is a 56 year old man based out of Delhi. Since the pandemic, he has been working from home with limited physical interaction with the outside world. He loves golfing but had to miss out on all the plans during the pandemic and now is ready to go out again but is anxious and concerned about her safety in this situation. His top priorities while looking for a game are: to get safe and sanitized plays, to be in a less crowded course with no covid cases, and enjoy a healthy social interaction while golfing with his friends.
- No real way to compare covid cases and crowd to finalize.
- No real way to get enough assurance for safe and sanitized plays with protocols and guidelines being followed strictly.
- Hassle to browse through other sources to find the pre-requisites for the area: RTPCR, Vaccinations, Arogya Setu, etc.

After understanding the users and the market, Ideation opened up the scope to explore how I could create a product that could solve users’ problems while meeting the business perspective. The aim was to generate a large number of ideas that I could filter out to create the best version of them.
| Problem | Resolution |
|---|---|
| Vision | |
| Near-focus making it difficult to read content | Using relative font-sizes, Providing large fonts by default, Avoiding center/fully aligned texts, Providing sufficient spacing. |
| Reduced contrast sensitivity / color perception | Use of a separate set of high contrast colors for primary/action buttons, Use of large images / icons, Use of non-destractive backgrounds, Increased depth of field |
| Physical Ability | |
| Reduced dexterity and fine motor control | Use of large buttons, Easy to reach targets on screen, Use of separate slots of bookings for regular vs. senior group of users |
| Cognitive Ability | |
| Reduced short-term memory, difficulty concentrating, and being easily distracted | Top down hierarchy, Simple & consistent navigation, Having one process at a time, Having a layered structure for subconscious memory, Absolutely no use of pop-ups, Long duration warning/success labels, Zero page/navigation reload |
